The fossilized bird tracks in the Haman Formation located at 299 Yongsan-ri, Chirwon-eup, Haman-gun, were discovered in the upper layer of the Haman Formation, a terrestrial layer from the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic Era.
The fossil site contains tracks of a bird species named Koreanaornis hamanensis, as well as rare fossils of Jindongornipes tracks and herbivorous dinosaur tracks.
The Koreanaornis hamanensis tracks make up the majority of the fossils, with Jindongornipes and dinosaur tracks being found in small numbers. While the Cretaceous period was a time of significant dinosaur proliferation, making dinosaur tracks relatively common, the discovery of bird tracks from this era is extremely rare.
The bird track fossils in the Haman Formation are the second discovery to be researched and published globally, making them highly valuable not only for their rarity but also for their significance as geological and biological natural history research materials. The site was designated as Natural Monument No. 222 on April 24, 1970 for protection.
