Haman Mugiyeondang Pond

Mugiyeondang Pond at the birthplace of Ju Jae-seong.

Located at 966, Mugiri, Chirwon-eup, Haman-gun, Mugiyeondang Pond is a late Joseon-era pond situated at the birthplace of Ju Jae-seong. Ju Jae-seong is known for raising a militia to help the government forces suppress Yi In-jwa's rebellion in the 4th year of King Yeongjo’s reign (1728). In honor of his contributions, the government forces erected a memorial stone (Changui Sajeokbi) at the village entrance and constructed the pond in front of the school building.

In the center of the pond, they created an island in the shape of a mountain. Ju Jae-seong later named the pond Gukdam and adopted it as his pen name. He spent his time studying and living in tranquility at the school near the pond.

Although an old house remains on the northwest side of the pond, many parts of it have been changed, diminishing its historical value. In later years, pavilions called Pungyokru and Hahwanjeong were built near the pond and more recently, a small templed called Chunghyosa was constructed. A wall was built around the pond and it was named Yeongguimun.

As a relatively well-preserved example of a late Joseon-era pond, Mugiyeondang is an important resource for studying Korean garden culture. It was designated as Important Folklore Material No. 208 on December 24, 1984.
